Egypt
Egypt’s energy story is one of transformation. Over the past decades, the country has steadily built up its renewable energy capacity—today boasting over 8 GW of installed solar and wind power. But this is just the beginning.
With over 32,000 GWh of renewable electricity already generated annually—12% of the national mix—Egypt is setting its sights higher: 42% renewables by 2030, and 120 GW of green hydrogen-linked capacity in the pipeline.
This shift isn’t just about numbers. It’s about resilience, independence, and innovation. Egypt is moving beyond centralised systems to embrace smarter, decentralised solutions that can adapt to future needs.
Decentralised. Resilient. Ready for the future.
Egypt is stepping into a new phase of its energy transition - one that’s not just about scaling up renewables, but about rethinking how electricity is delivered, managed, and shared. With high ambition for scaling renewables and their integration in the energy mix, Egypt is actively investing in strengthening its national grid and building the institutional and regulatory structures necessary for bringing through the transition. But as the energy system grows more complex, the need for smarter, more flexible solutions becomes clear.
-
8,6 GW installed capacity
Egypt has already installed over 8,6 gigawatts of renewable power, with an additional 17 GW contracted to be operational by 2030
-
65% renewables by 2040
Egypt aims for 65% renewables in its electricity mix by 2040, with over 65 GW from solar and wind energy
-
32 TWh renewable production
Which will be supported by up to 1,1 terawatt-hours in planned battery storage by 2030.
MENALINKS in action
Despite Egypt’s renewable momentum, smart mini-grids remain an untapped opportunity. Most existing systems are fossil-fuel powered, publicly operated, and lack formal registration—leaving little room for private innovation.
That’s changing.
Together with the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy (MoERE) and EgyptERA, MENALINKS is working to:
Define clear regulatory frameworks.
Clarify roles for public and private actors.
Create incentives for investment and innovation.
Egypt is not just scaling renewables—it’s rethinking how energy is delivered, managed, and shared. MENALINKS is proud to be part of that transformation.
