Morocco
The Moroccan energy sector is undergoing a dynamic transformation aimed at reducing its dependence on imported fossil fuels and accelerating the transition to a system dominated by renewable energies. With a national strategy targeting 52% renewables in its electricity mix by 2030, and aiming for 80% by 2050, the country is reshaping its energy landscape to reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels and drive sustainable growth.
Unlocking Morocco’s energy future: enabling scalable, flexible power systems through smart grid solutions
This transformation is not just about building capacity—it’s about building flexibility. Morocco is opening its market to independent power producers (IPPs), enabling medium-voltage self-production, and allowing up to 20% of generated capacity to be fed into the grid. These reforms are laying the groundwork for a smarter, more responsive energy system, thereby strengthening the contribution of renewables to the energy mix.
-
52% renewable electricity by 2030
Morocco aims to generate over half of its electricity from renewables by 2030.
-
80% renewable electricity by 2050
A long-term vision to become a regional leader in clean energy.
MENALINKS in action
In Morocco, MENALINKS is helping turn ambition into action. The programme is implementing a comprehensive workplan focused on urban smart grids and demand aggregation to support renewable integration.
Activities include:
Grid flexibility potential: comparative evaluation of flexibility potential across the tourism and industrial sectors, using detailed modelling and simulations to assess technical and economic feasibility.
Deep dive in the hotel sector: targeted analysis and pilot testing at the Green Energy Park to quantify demand-side flexibility and its impact on regional load profiles.
Regulatory innovation: international benchmarking to explore regulatory incentives and equitable benefit-sharing mechanisms for unlocking distribution-level grid flexibility.
Industrial flexibility: site-level evaluations using specialised modelling tools to assess flexibility in industrial operations.
Capacity building: regional exchanges, peer-to-peer trainings, and tailored educational modules—including a study tour and workshops on BESS.
These efforts are designed to demonstrate how urban grid flexibility solutions can support Morocco’s renewable energy ambitions by enhancing grid flexibility and enabling sector coupling.
Morocco isn’t just expanding renewables—it’s building the systems to manage them intelligently. MENALINKS is proud to support this transformation.
