Advancing demand side flexibility in Morocco’s hospitality sector
On 2 June 2026, hotel representatives, energy experts, and sector stakeholders gathered in Marrakech for the Forum de Flexibilité Hôtelière to discuss how the hospitality sector can contribute to Morocco’s energy transition through improved energy management, flexibility, and renewable energy integration.
The forum explored opportunities for hotels to reduce energy consumption and emissions while maintaining operational performance and guest comfort. Discussions focused on energy flexibility as an approach to optimize electricity demand, improve energy efficiency, and facilitate the integration of renewable energy sources within the broader electricity system.
Why this matters for MENALINKS
The event aligns closely with MENALINKS activities in Morocco, where the programme supports the assessment of flexibility potential in buildings and the development of practical measures to enhance energy performance and demand response measures. In the hospitality context, this includes energy flexibility audits, action plans, technical guidance, identification of financing opportunities, and support for implementation.
The discussions highlighted the growing role that buildings can play in supporting a more flexible and resilient energy system. Improving visibility of energy consumption, deploying smarter control solutions, and strengthening the interaction between buildings and the grid can contribute to both operational benefits and national energy and climate objectives. The objective is to reduce energy consumption and emissions in high-consuming buildings by strengthening their role within the electricity system, while developing a scalable model that can be replicated more broadly.
For the hospitality sector, the path forward is increasingly clear:
· Efficiency first
· Local renewables where viable
· Digital visibility and smarter control to provide flexibility
· Partnerships that turn plans into projects
The forum also underlined the importance of cooperation between public institutions, technical experts, financial partners, and industry stakeholders to advance practical implementation. Such exchanges help build the partnerships needed to develop and scale flexibility solutions across Morocco and the wider MENA region. The forum marked an important step in that direction.
