MENALINKS and IsDB co-host panel at COP29 in Baku
On 20 November 2024, a panel discussion titled “Renewable Integration through Sector Coupling in the MENA Region” was held at the Joint Multilateral Development Banks Pavilion during COP29 in Baku. Co-hosted by the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) and the MENALINKS programme, the session convened regional and international experts to explore strategies for enhancing power system flexibility and accelerating renewable energy integration across the MENA region.

H.E. Dr Ahmed Mohina, First Undersecretary at the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy of Egypt
Dr Maged Mahmoud, Technical Director at the Regional Center for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (RCREEE)
Mr Amr Sobhy, Energy Specialist at the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB)
The session was moderated by Katja Eisbrenner (Guidehouse), with the MENALINKS programme presented by Katharina Meyer-Landrut (Guidehouse).
Discussions centred on the urgent need to advance sector coupling and smart grid solutions to support the region’s renewable energy ambitions. Dr Mohina outlined Egypt’s plans to expand its renewable energy portfolio, while Dr Mahmoud stressed the importance of regional collaboration and knowledge exchange. From a multilateral development bank perspective, Mr Sobhy emphasised the role of South-South cooperation in fostering innovation and mobilising investment.

The event attracted a diverse audience and sparked dynamic exchanges on the roles of multilateral development banks, national governments, and private sector actors in shaping the energy transition. It underscored the value of inclusive dialogue and strategic partnerships in driving forward the MENA region’s clean energy agenda.
