MENALINKS launches Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) workstream in Tunisia

On 5 and 6 February 2025, the MENALINKS programme officially launched its Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) workstream in Tunisia. The kick-off brought together over 25 high-level stakeholders, including representatives from the Ministry of Energy, Mines, and Energy Transition (MIME), the Tunisian Company of Electricity and Gas (STEG), and the National Agency for Energy Management (ANME).

The two-day event featured a technical workshop and consultation meetings focused on both regulatory and operational aspects of BESS. Participants collaborated to define a comprehensive workplan that will guide activities over the coming years.

Supporting Tunisia’s energy transition through BESS

To accelerate the integration of renewable energy in Tunisia, BESS has been identified as a strategic priority under the MENALINKS programme. The workshop provided a platform to explore the regulatory and technical challenges associated with BESS deployment. Stakeholders shared their perspectives on how energy storage and flexibility solutions can address capacity constraints and align with national energy priorities.

This ongoing dialogue forms a strong foundation for MENALINKS’ support to MIME, STEG, and ANME in advancing BESS implementation.

Identifying needs and unlocking potential

In preparation for BESS integration into Tunisia’s electricity grid, key regulatory, operational, financial, and capacity-building needs have already been identified. Preliminary studies have confirmed the critical role of storage technologies in supporting Tunisia’s ambitious renewable energy targets. The recent launch of the country’s first large-scale energy storage projects marks a significant milestone in overcoming barriers to BESS deployment.

MENALINKS is committed to contributing to these national efforts and supporting its Tunisian partners in strengthening the regulatory and technical framework in line with Tunisia’s energy transition goals.

Collaborative planning for BESS implementation

The MENALINKS consortium is working closely with Tunisian stakeholders to develop a detailed workplan that will assess the technical, regulatory, and commercial dimensions necessary for successful BESS project implementation. This collaborative approach ensures alignment with national priorities and paves the way for impactful and sustainable energy solutions.
