First MENALINKS Study Tour in Berlin strengthens capacities on power system flexibility

Stakeholders from Egypt, Morocco, and Jordan convened in Berlin to advance knowledge and collaboration on flexibility solutions.

From 17–19 February 2025, the MENALINKS programme hosted its first South-to-North Study Tour in Berlin, focusing on flexibility technologies, tools, and frameworks. The event provided a platform for learning, knowledge exchange, and inspiration. Thirteen stakeholders from Egypt, Morocco, and Jordan - representing ministries, network operators, and implementation partners – participated in the event. The Study Tour was organized by RENAC and Guidehouse.

The study tour offered valuable opportunities for interdisciplinary knowledge sharing and peer exchange on the challenges and opportunities of renewable energy integration in MENALINKS’ partner countries Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, Tunisia and Türkiye.

Participants included representatives from the Jordanian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR), the Moroccan Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, the National Electric Power Company (NEPCO), Green Energy Park (GEP), the Royal Scientific Society (RSS), Institut de Recherche en Énergie Solaire et Énergies Nouvelles (IRESEN), and the Regional Center for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (RCREEE).

Key activities included:

  • A meeting with the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) and the International Climate Initiative (IKI), where participants shared integration challenges from their respective countries, followed by an open exchange on cooperation interests.

  • An expert workshop on flexibility technologies with contributions from Guidehouse, the German Energy Storage Systems Association (BVES), the German Society for Solar Energy (DGS), and Schneider Electric.

  • A finance workshop with experts from Guidehouse, Greenwerk, and Elia Grid International (EGI).

  • Technical deep-dive discussions with experts from EGI and 50Hertz.

  • Site visits to the SIEMENS showroom for flexibility and the European Energy Forum (EUREF) Campus.

During the Study Tour, the stakeholders discussed technical considerations for power system flexibility, learned about solutions to overcome financial barriers and identified opportunities for further exchange and cooperation. The MENALINKS programme will organize more capacity building study tours covering different topics, both in Berlin and in MENALINKS partner countries. The first South-to-South Study Tour will take place in Morocco in October 2025.
